Rob's day
Hi All
At Hunter's Hall today for another interclub match with Abbey Cross. No wind first thing so unusual to see the lake flat calm. Also zero percent chance of rain forecast for most of the day, so not surprised to have light rain most of the match.
Drew peg 5 on the left hand bank – water levels as everywhere down so not easy to find much depth for the nets (not an issue as it turned out!). Set up a cage feeder and two pole rigs – one for 13m in 6½ foot and a closer one in 4 foot. Balled in 5 balls of groundbait at 13m (had left the cupping kits at home) – put out 4 feeder's full of bait in the middle and started on the short line. After 5 minutes or so had a few bites resulting in roach around 2 -3oz but after an hour the line died. Out at 13m produced no bites so a try on the feeder – also biteless. Back short for nothing so went out at 13m for most of the remainder of the match hoping a few bream would turn up.
Elsewhere seemed quiet with a few roach turning up for most but few larger fish. This was with the exception of Ray on fancied peg 16 – middle platform. After feeding what looked like a couple of tins of corn, he started getting a bream a chuck for a while. Most of us just looking on although I was expecting a few bream or tench to show on one or two of the other pegs.
A breeze now coming across the lake mad seeing bites difficult, but when I did get a bite it was small roach – no sign of anything bigger today.
I weighed in my bank – Alan Sims registering 4lbs 6oz for best weight at our end of the lake – Phil 2lbs 8oz, my 2lbs 6oz and Barry 3oz. Some better weights nearer the car park – notably Jeff's 7lbs 15oz which included a bream and 2 tench for 3rd place overall. On the other bank Peter came second from the first platform swim with 11lbs 4oz of mainly bream but the runaway winner was Ray with 32lbs 5oz – well done Ray.
Unfortunately we couldn’t provide enough backup weights despite discarding the lowest 2 weights (8 against 6) so Abbey Cross came out easy winners 55 to 47. Thanks to Abbey Cross and Martin for hosting the match. BTW Martin reported that his draw bag number 16 is missing – suspected that Ray wasn’t satisfied with his win but also took away the peg number!! – if anyone has it let me know, Martin would like it back!
