Rob's day
At Wickham Hall today for a Wednesday match transferred from Malcolm Barkers. We were not expecting too much as the temperatures had dropped over the last day or so - it was -2C as we drove in this morning. Also very bright and no wind at all so the lake was flat calm. The sun did warm us up a bit though (at least those not in the shade of the trees!). Seven of us on today so spread around the lake – I drew peg 1 just at the bottom of the sloped path.
Set up a long pole in around 10 foot or so and a whip at 6m – around 7 foot. I had intended to also set up a feeder rod for the middle but as I had left my rod bag at home that was not an option! Fed a few balls of groundbait long and one short and started on the whip. After 5 hours on the whip and pole – maggots and pinkies, not a sign!
Everyone seemed to be having the same results with the exception of John Todd to my left on peg 3. John seemed to be getting a few bites, after managing one chublet, John had a couple of bream in quick succession and one roach. Forty minutes left and out of the blue had my one and only bite – a 2oz chublet.
At the weigh in John easily won the match with 4lbs 7oz (pic), Terry had sneaked out 7 small roach for 7oz for second and my chublet good enough for third. Unfortunately the rest of the field blanked.
Hopefully with a further stocking of fish and some warmer weather come spring, this lake will fish better, it’s a nice place to sit and the work parties have done a great job with the paths.
